چکیده

An in vitro test for the differentiation of trachoma strain isolates was described. The method was based on absorption of trachoma antiserum followed by immunofluorescent staining of individual trachoma strains. Nineteen trachoma strains were studied; two main types were identified. Evidence for quantitative and qualitative antigenic variation between the two types was presented. The limitations in practice and in theory of the test were emphasized.

Antibody type specificity to trachoma in eye secretions of saudi arab children.

The presence of trachoma antibody in eye secretions of Saudi Arab children appears to be a direct response to the infecting organism. In 35 of 36 cases, the trachoma antibody type found in eye secretions was identical to the strain type isolated concurrently. Strain types were identified by use of donkey hyperimmune sera prepared against types 1, 1b, and 2. The specificity of the sera was enhan...

Complete Genome Sequence of Chlamydia trachomatis Ocular Serovar C Strain TW-3

Chlamydia trachomatis is the etiological agent of trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. We report here the first complete and annotated genome of a C. trachomatis trachoma-causing serovar C strain (strain TW-3). The chromosome and plasmid are 1,043,554 bp and 7,501 bp in length, respectively.

Serology for Trachoma Surveillance after Cessation of Mass Drug Administration

BACKGROUND Trachoma, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct), is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Yearly azithromycin mass drug administration (MDA) plays a central role in efforts to eliminate blinding trachoma as a public health problem. Programmatic decision-making is currently based on the prevalence of the clinical sign "trachomatous inflammation-follicular" (TF) in childr...

A live-attenuated chlamydial vaccine protects against trachoma in nonhuman primates

Blinding trachoma is an ancient neglected tropical disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis for which a vaccine is needed. We describe a live-attenuated vaccine that is safe and efficacious in preventing trachoma in nonhuman primates, a model with excellent predictive value for humans. Cynomolgus macaques infected ocularly with a trachoma strain deficient for the 7.5-kb conserved plasmid present...

Pulmonary infection of adult white mice with the TE 55 strain of trachoma virus.

Thygeson & Nataf (1958) stated, ‘It is now generally agreed that only primates are susceptible to experimental infection with trachoma virus ’. Since then Giroud, Renoux & Nataf (1958) have reported pulmonary hepatization in mice after intranasal inoculation of material from trachomatous conjunctivae; Hurst & Reeve (1960) reported passage of the TE55 strain in mouse brain; and Bernkopf (1959) r...
